PathBuilder: help choosing a university subject
For students in Years 9 to 11 who are not yet sure which subject to study. PathBuilder explores up to three subject streams with a mentor, then focuses on the one that holds up.
Who PathBuilder is for
PathBuilder suits a student who is curious and capable but has not yet settled on a subject, or a family who says: we don't really know what they want to study yet.
It works best started before Year 12, so that the reading and thinking it produces can feed into the personal statement and interviews later.
How it works
- 1
Explore
Your student explores up to three subject streams across the physical, biological and human sciences with a mentor, to see which interests hold up once the reading gets serious.
- 2
Decide
At the stream decision, one stream is chosen and structured Wider Reading begins in it.
- 3
Review every month
A one-to-one progress meeting with the mentor each month, followed by a written report to the family on subject fit, grades and super-curricular plans.
What your student does
- A short written reflection each week, which becomes the record a personal statement can draw on later
- A monthly interdisciplinary seminar on topical questions, with students from different subject streams in the same room: future engineers alongside future lawyers, for example
- A comprehension task and report
PathBuilder and Wider Reading
PathBuilder decides where the depth should point. Wider Reading builds the depth. A student who already knows their subject may only need Wider Reading.
Questions and answers
What if my child changes their mind?
That is expected. If an interest shifts, the reading mentor is re-matched to the new subject.
How much does PathBuilder cost?
We do not publish prices, because the right support depends on the student. A written proposal follows the free consultation.
